Bologna dropped an opportunity to separate themselves from Vicenza’s challenge on second place losing 2-0 to the Biancorossi at the Stadio Renato Dall’Ara while a stoppage-time strike continued Latina’s journey from the foot of the table against Trapani in Serie B action on Friday night.

A brace by Federico Moretti powered Vicenza to their sixth consecutive victory, and first in 50 years at the Dall’Ara, putting the Veneto club a solitary point behind Bologna and six points behind pace-setters Carpi. Since arriving in October, coach Pasquale Marino has guided the club from a relegation position to their current lofty position amassing 36 points in only 17 matches.

Both sides started off on the front foot despite the stakes and began attacking one another from the opening whistle. The inevitable goal came inside a quarter hour when Andrea Cocco received a pass at the top of the area and despite being surrounded by a trio of Rossoblu defenders was taken down unnecessarily by Nenand Krsticic setting up a dangerous set piece opportunity. Moretti exploited a space in the Bologna wall and his shot tucked into Ferdinando Coppola’s far post to draw first blood for the visitors.

The deficit didn’t demoralize the hosts as Bologna kept attacking and twice came close to scoring on shots by Matteo Mancosu and Karim Laribi but were stopped by Vicenza’s Mauro Vigorito. The Berici soaked up pressure from the hosts and were having success launching counter attacks against the Felsenei and it was on the counter where the tide really turned against Bologna.

Daniel Bessa picked up a yellow slowing down Cocco shortly after the goal and less than 10 minutes later was punished again when he hacked down Stefano Giacomelli giving Bologna a mountain to climb against a motivated Vicenza side.

The halftime whistle couldn’t come quickly enough for Bologna but the break did little to change their fortunes. Vicenza exploited the extra space with their numerical advantage and Moretti’s right foot once again proved decisive as the 26-year old received the ball some 30 meters away, attacked the goal and unleashed a rocket to the top corner to seal the victory.

Latina have enjoyed a revival of their own under Mark Iuliano picking up 13 points in seven matches under the former Italian national team defender. In a match destined to end in a goalless draw, Trapani’s Romano Perticone clumsily went through Marco Crimi in the area and Federico Viviani chipped the keeper to gift the home side three points and their third consecutive victory.
