Following Athletic Club’s exit from the UEFA Europa League at the hands of Torino, head coach Ernesto Valverde expressed his disappointment at his side’s defensive display in the 3-2 loss, as well as praising the Granata.

The Bilbao-based side had the away goal advantage after a 2-2 first leg draw in Turin, but goals from Fabio Quagliarella, Maxi Lopez, and Matteo Darmian were able to seal progression to the Round of 16 for Giampiero Ventura’s men.

“In comparison to the first game, we could not control this match at any point,” said Valverde in his post match press conference.

“I want to congratulate Torino as they put in a strong and experienced performance, as well as having the ability to score goals.”

The former Valencia boss refused to single out Carlos Gurpegi as the main reason for the loss, as the defender conceded a penalty in the first half which resulted in Quagliarella’s opener.

“The penalty we conceded was a bad mistake from Gurpegi, but we really weren’t good enough with the other goals either.

“Our defending for Maxi Lopez’s header was especially poor.”

I concur with Valverde. I did not expect Torino to defeat Bilbao. Especially considering A) they knocked out Napoli for a CL spot and B) the fact Spanish sides have been very successful against Serie A in recent years.

Huge win for Torino and by extension Serie A. Beating a Liga team is no small task.

Torino played extremely well in all facets of the field; their offensive prowess in particular.

    Well deserved.
