Sampdoria goalkeeper Emiliano Viviano has admitted he was wrong to square up to Genoa’s Iago Falque in the aftermath of the attacker’s opening goal in the derby.

The former Tottenham man popped up at the back post to turn home M’Baye Niang’s enticing delivery and Viviano was booked for displaying his anger towards Falque as he celebrated the strike.

“I thought that his celebration was provocative and I realise now it was not, so much so that I apologised,” he told Sky Sport Italia. “The same is true of Mihajlovic and Regini’s clash. The coach is like me and sometimes can lose his temper but he is a good person and he also said sorry.”

On his crucial last minute save that rescued a point for Genoa, Viviano was self-effacing, insisting: “I am not sure how important that last minute save was. It was too bad that it was only to rescue a point and not help us hold on to a 1-0 lead.

“Who will finish ahead in the table between us? I don’t know we are not used to speaking about Genoa. We will only think of ourselves.”
