Cagliari head coach Gianfranco Zola has regrets over his side’s missed opportunities against Inter and has admitted that the Isolani must grow as a team.

The Nerazzurri left the Stadio Sant’Elia with a tight 2-1 win thanks to second half goals from Mateo Kovacic and Mauro Icardi, and Zola said that Inter were better at finishing off their chances.

“There are many regrets over the chances we created when we were 1-0 down,” Zola told Sky Sport Italia after the game.

“Inter, truth be told, took control of the first half but were able to stamp their authority in the second half; that was the difference.

“[Paul-Jose] M’Poku? He showed great character and quality today, and it is important for us at this time to make use of the quality we possess.

“We are happy, we need to grow but I must say we defended well enough in the first half, but it is hard to find the right balance in football.

“We will improve, but tonight we were unfortunate to play an in-form side.

“[Samuele] Longo did very well, he changed the course of the game, he made a difference.

“I am very happy for him, he worked well and he has unique characteristics that are important to the team.”

The former Parma man also spoke about his former club’s current financial difficulties, which could see them go bankrupt.

“I feel very sorry, I have ties with the club and I hope that they can find a solution.”
