Paolo Maldini - AC MilanFormer AC Milan captain Paolo Maldini has revealed how the Rossoneri fans got under his skin after they taunted him following his final match at the Stadio San Siro.

On May 24 2009, the Italian icon played for the last time in front of his home fans in what should have been an unforgettable experience, however, the day was marred after a number of Milan Ultras displayed banners criticising the one-club man.

“I was not expecting them [the fans] to do that and it did annoy me,” said Maldini to the television channel Rai.

“I was quite fortunate during my career as I never really witnessed that side of football and overall I am proud of how my life turned out.”

During the same programme former Milan goalkeeper Villiam Vecchi who was a coach at the time, was also asked to give his opinion on the sour incident.

“It was one of the most upsetting things I have experienced during my life in football,” said Vecchi to Rai.

Over the course of 25 years and 902 appearances, Maldini helped Milan reach the pinnacle of world football.

He won a total of seven Scudetti, five European Cups and a Coppa Italia [and more] before finally retiring in the Summer of 2009.
