Antonio Conte ItalyItaly coach Antonio Conte was encouraged by the performance of an experimental Azzurri side in their 1-1 draw with England at the Juventus Stadium in an international friendly on Tuesday night.

Southampton’s Graziano Pelle gave the Azzurri the lead half an hour into the game with a header in a first half dominated by home side. However the Three Lions improved after half time and with ten minutes remaining in the match, Andros Townsend fired an equalising goal.

Speaking to Rai Sport after the match, Conte gave his thoughts on the closely fought friendly which saw several inexperienced players blooded on the international stage.

“We had a lot of chances, it’s a shame,” he said. “But I’m happy because I had the opportunity to see more of some players, such as [Mirko] Valdifiori.

“We need more depth in the national team and we need to grow in confidence, even from these games.

“We have to have more continuity. In the second half fatigue took over and our level dropped. We have to keep working and wait for these players to grow.”
