Kevin Strootman is likely to sign a new contract and extend his stay at the Stadio Olimpico.

The Dutch international has missed much of the last 18 months with a knee injury and has been linked with a move to join former Netherlands coach Louis Van Gaal at Manchester United.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, however, Strootman is on the verge of signing a new contract with Roma.

The contract is rumoured to run until the 2019/2020 season, adding four further years onto his current deal which runs until 2016.

It has also been suggested that Roma will offer Strootman the captaincy in the years to come, as a way of ensuring that the in-demand midfielder stays at the club.
