Eder - Sampdoria v SassuoloBrazilian-born striker Eder has claimed that the controversy surrounding his recent call-up to the Italian national team is nonsense and that he is delighted to representing the Azzurri.

The recent inclusion of Franco Vazquez and Eder in the national side, of whom neither were born in Italy, has led to recent criticism from the likes of Inter coach Roberto Mancini, however the 28-year-old has stated that the entire debate is irrelevant.

“The controversy surrounding the Oriundi is complete nonsense,” said Eder when speaking to Brazilian newspaper Diario Catarinese. “Mauro Camoranesi [Argentine born midfielder who helped Italy win the World Cup in 2006] was very important for the Italian national side and I would be happy to even have half of his success.

“In Italy, they have a different mindset from that of other countries and I believe that Mancini’s opinion is not helping the prejudice.”

He then continued: “Even Germany have used players from other countries, as well as France who have several players from Africa. I do not see why I should be any different and be denied the chance to play.”

Despite the controversy, Eder has spoken of his delight after receiving the call to represent Italy.

“I certainly didn’t expect to be called up and the emotion within me is still strong.

“As soon I was asked I said yes straight away. I would not have accepted just any national team.

“Since I have arrived I have been struck the humility of the older players and they have all welcomed me with open arms.”
