AC Milan midfielder Michael Essien believes his club belongs in European competitions and tries to explain what happened against Fiorentina and how the Rossoneri will try to get out of their current crisis.

The Rossoneri have won a solitary Serie A game since the turn of the year and Pippo Inzaghi’s side is getting under increased pressure from their own fans, who are calling for a boycott of Milan’s Saturday evening match against Cagliari.

“The match against Fiorentina? It was a very strange match. We could have finished them off, but we couldn’t take advantage of our opportunities, after that I cannot explain what happened.,” Essien told Milan Channel.

“We played well in the first half. We always start off well, but somehow in the second half something bad always happens. We need to improve.

“Van Ginkel? I know Marco from Chelsea, he’s a good player, but he still has time to grow.

“How to get out of this crisis? We have to work harder and try to entertain the fans on the field and we have to stay focused in the second half as well.

“The match against Cagliari will be a difficult one, but we have to keep trying. There are still many games to be played and many points avaliable. We will try to bring Milan to Europe, because it is where the club belongs.”
