Roma midfielder Kevin Strootman has responded angrily to media reports surrounding his injury – insisting he is on track to be fully fit in time for the club’s pre-season training schedule.

Former club doctor Mario Brozzi had claimed that after the Dutch midfielder’s latest knee injury, following on from the one which sidelined him for the end of last season and the World Cup, he may never return to become the player he was before.

An angry Strootman went to his Twitter account to refute the allegations, along with a picture of himself on an exercise bike: “Contrary to reports in the media, I am back in training and working hard on my comeback.

“Please do not believe people who have never seen me in their lives, but just follow the social media pages of me and AS Roma where we will keep you updated on my progress.”

He added: “Just for the record, I’m right on schedule to be back when preseason starts.”
