Wolfsburg coach Dieter Hecking was very happy with his team’s performance as they strode beyond Inter into the Europa League quarter-finals.

Inter worked hard to get back into the game after losing another early goal in a 2-1 defeat on the night, but the Wolves were up to the challenge in a 5-2 aggregate victory which leaves Napoli and Fiorentina in the competition from Serie A.

“We are happy not only for the result but for the way we handled the game,” said Hecking during a post-match press conference.

“We knew it would be difficult, we had some luck and then took advantage of our opportunities.

“After the goal Inter rallied well, and we were able to create chances on the break.

“I’m glad I won twice with Inter – for the young guys is a big step forward.

“They [Inter] tried everything, but we gave the right response.”

The coach was coy when asked if Wolfsburg are capable of winning the Europa League this year.

“There are still so many strong teams in the competition, such as Napoli and Fiorentina, but we must see what happens in the next round,” said Hecking.
