Juventus StadiumJuventus have turned down the English FA’s offer to lay a wreath commemorating the Heysel disaster before Italy’s meeting with England at the Juventus Stadium on March 31.

39 people were killed in Brussels in 1985 during the European Cup final between Juventus and Liverpool.

According to the BBC, Juve have turned down the English FA’s plans to commemorate the tragedy as the Bianconeri have their own plans for a memorial service in May, the 30th anniversary of the tragedy.

As hosts of the international friendly, Juventus acknowledged that they appreciated the planned gesture from their English guests but didn’t want it to detract from their own scheduled commemorative service.

The English FA had asked Phil Neal, who was Liverpool captain on May 29, 1985, to lay flowers as a symbol of reconciliation.
