World Cup winning coach Marcello Lippi confessed that the biggest mistake of his career was returning to the Italy post for their bid to retain it in 2010.

Having led the Azzurri to victory in the 2006 World Cup in Germany, he left the post afterwards but soon returned after Roberto Donadoni’s departure and led the side to South Africa where they exited the tournament in the group stages without winning a single game.

Speaking about his career this week, he said: “At Juve, I felt I was able to rebuild my mentality and that of the club too as we had not always won. In fact, when I arrived at Juve, they had not won for 10 years.

“The first year, we won the Scudetto and the second year was the Champions League. Now they have regained supremacy in Italy and are gearing up to excel in Europe too.”

He added: “The biggest mistake [of my career] was to return to the national team even though I felt in debt to them because I had left.”
