Roberto Mancini has lamented his sides wasted chances after Inter were defeated by a hardworking Fiorentina team at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza on Sunday evening.

The Nerazzurri created plenty of opportunities to equalise late in the match, after the visitors had been reduced to nine men as a result of injuries. However their profligacy in the final third meant that a second half goal from on loan Chelsea forward Mohamed Salah was enough to claim victory for the Viola and end the Tuscan club’s 15 year wait for an away win over Inter.

“We have been generous [towards Fiorentina] right to the end,” Mancini told Sky Sport Italia after the match.

“We knew that they are a good team who have been playing together for a long time. They went ahead and caused us trouble, but we had many opportunities to equal the score and we made plenty of chances and could even have won.

“Was Palacio selfish? We had this sensational opportunity to score and he is a proven scorer but it just didn’t happen on this occasion.

“Both teams tried to win the match and after the goal I have never seen us create so many opportunities. There are such small margins between losing, winning and drawing. Football is like that.”

The defeat leaves Inter in eighth place in the Serie A table, seven points off the European spots.
