Aurelio De Laurentiis NapoliNapoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis hopes to bring Pope Francis to the Sao Paolo, after the Head of the Catholic Church visited the area on Saturday.

The Pope visited the poorest areas of Naples while also meeting the Azzurri president and coach Rafa Benitez in his stay in the Southern city, with De Laurentiis hoping to engage in the Pontiff’s love of football.

“The visit was not only symbolic: never before has Naples felt so close to a Pope,” he posted on Twitter.

“Soon we will organise a game between Napoli and San Lorenzo because Pope Francis is a big football fan – hopefully he will be there and can come out for kick-off, who knows.”

The Argentina-born Pope has been very public about his support for the Buenos Aires-based team, with the Azulgrana’s new stadium set to be named after the religious leader.

“The Pope’s visit to Naples was an extraordinary event, we will remember it for a lifetime.”
