Former Italian international Christian Panucci has been appointed the new coach of promotion chasing Serie B side Livorno following the departure of Ezio Gelain.

Despite currently sitting in the play off spots in sixth place, Gelain was relieved of his duties following the Amaranto’s 3-0 defeat to Spezia at the weekend.

The 54-year-old last only two and a half months in the position after taking over from Carmine Gautieri in December.

In their attempt to return to Serie A at the first time of asking, Livorno have now turned to Panucci who takes up the role despite having no prior experience of being in charge of a team, although the former Roma and AC Milan defender did work on Fabio Capello’s staff with the Russian national side.

Another former Rossonero, Stefano Eranio, has been appointed as Panucci’s assistant at the Stadio Armando Picchi.
