Tuesday night saw a full slate of matches in Serie B including league leaders Carpi shaking off a string of four consecutive draws to notch a 2-0 victory over third place Avellino at the Stadio Sandro Cabassi, a result which sees the Biancorossi stretch their league lead to a comfortable eight points.

Carpi coach Fabrizio Castori had to shuffle his lineup to account for the absence of four regulars but still managed keep a clean sheet and hit four posts en route to a dominating performance over an in-form Lupi side who had won four of their last five matches.

Although the hosts began pressing from the opening whistle, the first pair of real chances fell to the Biancoverdi from corner kicks. Defender Alessandro Fabro climbed high but his header sailed just wide and moments later a short corner packed in the Carpi defense and when the ball was played back to Paolo Regoli, his right-footed volley shot required a diving Gabriel save to prevent the ball from slipping inside the far post.

The Biancorossi quickly gathered themselves and proved why they’ve been the league’s measuring stick when Antonio Di Gaudio’s rebounded shot fell back to him and the 25-year old striker’s bicycle attempt landed a mere inches from its target. The inevitable goal came before the stroke of half time when Di Gaudio’s inch-perfect cross was headed in by an unmarked Lorenzo Lollo at the edge of the six-yard area. Gabriel was only troubled by a handful of centrally placed shots from the visitors and it was little surprise when Kevin Lasagna sealed the victory in stoppage time.

Frosinone continue to turn the Stadio Matusa into a fortress with only one loss in 15 home matches this season. The Canarini downed a struggling Perugia 2-1 to lay claim to third place on the strength of goals from Federico Dionisi and Alessandro Frara’s first goal of the season.

A goal fiesta was in the cards at the Stadio Alberto Picco with five different Aquilotti players getting on the scoresheet as Spezia destroyed Pro Vercelli 5-2.

In a match which featured great stops from both keepers, Bari and Catania waited until the final seven minutes to score a goal apiece at the Stadio San Nicola. 18-year old Mattia Rossetti broke the deadlock when he scored his first in only his third match but victory was foiled when Giuseppe De Luca’s stoppage time strike rescued a point for Bari.

Cittadella crushed Varese 3-0 moving Citta to a comfortable mid-table position, a far cry from being rooted to the bottom of the table at the beginning of the calendar year.

Vicenza and Lanciano both finished with 10 men and drew 2-2 with Andrea Cocco grabbing a late goal to continue the Berici’s streak of eight matches without a defeat.

Marco Sansovini’s late wonder strike earned Pescara a deserved 2-1 victory over cellar-dwellers Crotone while Modena grabbed their first victory in nine matches downing Brescia 1-0.

Bologna failed to keep pace with the leaders as the Rossoblu finished in a scoreless draw with Latina while Entella visited Ternana and defeated the Rossoverdi 1-0.
