Bologna fought back to defeat Varese 3-1 at the Stadio Franco Ossola and cement their stronghold on second place in a busy Serie B Saturday which featured 10 matches.

Varese’s Daniele Corti put the Leopardi up just before the stroke of half time with well placed shot outside the area but Daniele Cacia’s two goals in the space of five minutes after the break and Gianluca Sansone’s late goal wrapped up the three points for the Rossoblu and provided distance between themselves and a host of squads vying for second place and an automatic promotion to Serie A.

Bologna controlled most of the match putting the hosts to the sword from the onset but it took Corti’s goal, Varese’s only shot on target in the match, to wake up the Felsinei and spur the visitors toward their fifth consecutive road victory. Varese now sit bottom of the table with only a single point in their last five home matches.

Avellino bounced back from last week’s comprehensive defeat against league-leaders Carpi by defeating a Bari side which had started to string together some positive results with a 2-0 scoreline at the Stadio Partenio.

The Lupi held Bari without much effort and buzzed around the net but were unable to get on the scoresheet until a punishing free kick was parried away from the far post but right onto the path of Angelo D’Angelo whose header broke the deadlock inside the half hour. Bari’s Giulio Ebagua caused problems for the Avellino backbone all day as the powerful Nigerian ran at the Biancoverdi defense but when called upon Avellino’s Pierluigi Frattali was able get to stay strong and keep a clean sheet for the hosts. Fulham on loan striker Marcelo Trotta added his third goal in seven matches with a shot outside the area to seal the victory in the final five minutes.

Pescara’s bid for a fourth straight victory was foiled at the death when Andrea Cocco was not tightly marked and his header sailed just past the fingertips of Vincenzo Fiorillo extending the Berici’s unbeaten run to nine matches.

Livorno surrendered the first goal at home to Ternana but came back in convincing fashion winning 3-1 and maintaining a play off position in a crowded field which is sure to continue through the season’s final dozen matches.

Emanuele Calaio rescued a point for Catania with his league-leading 15th goal in stoppage time against Spezia to earn a 2-2 draw for the Sicilians.

Carpi held serve by traveling to Latina and winning 1-0 while Crotone managed to lift themselves from the basement by downing Trapani 1-0.

Brescia traveled to Pro Vercelli and Perugia hosted Lanciano with both matches ending in a goal less draws.
