Inter attacker Xherdan Shaqiri says he wants to help make the Italian giants one of the European greats once more.

The 23-year-old joined the club in January for an undisclosed fee but the Nerazzurri have struggled continuously throughout this season and face a fight if they are to qualify for Europe next season.

He spoke to SRF, a media outlet in his native Switzerland, and said: “Why did I choose Inter? This club have given me the best prospects going ahead. There is a project in place here and we want to bring the club to where it deserves to be.

“I want to do my best to contribute to that.”

Despite winning a treble during his tie at the Allianz Arena with Bayern Munich, Shaqiri also admitted that he is much happier in Italy than he was in the Bundesliga.

“Is it better to be in Milan or Bavaria? Milan. Inter are not at the levels of Bayern but I am here to bring this team back to the glories of the past. I will stay here and do that.

“Where would I like to end my career? Basel, I want to return there.”
