FIGC president Carlo Tavecchio has stated that Italy coach Antonio Conte was left shaken after receiving death threats.

Juventus midfielder Claudio Marchisio reportedly tore his anterior cruciate ligament in training on Friday, and a row emerged between Fiat president John Elkann – who is also the cousin of club president Andrea Agnelli – and Conte, with the former claiming that Conte makes the players work too much.

“Conte was shaken when I saw him in the morning,” he told Radio Rai. “He received death threats after yesterday’s controversy.

“We’ve talked a lot and he isn’t comfortable, he feels vilified for something that he has nothing to do with.

“The federation is backing him, I’ve never seen a coach being attacked as much as he has. He is currently the best coach in Italian football.”

Tavecchio then went on to state that he will not reply to Elkann’s words, whilst also praising the Bianconeri.

“Elkann? I’m not going to reply to his words,” he said. “Juve have made Italian football history, and they are currently the only team left in the Champions League. However, there are 19 other teams in Serie A.”

It later emerged that Marchisio’s injury is not as bad as it first appeared to be, with the Juve doctors ruling out the possibility of a cruciate ligament tear.
