Torino’s meeting with Empoli has been moved from May 4 to May 5 out of respect for the Superga air disaster.

May 4 2015 will be the 66th anniversary of the tragedy when 31 passengers and crew were killed after the plane that was transporting the Grande Torino side from Lisbon to Turin crashed into the Basilica of Superga.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the game had been scheduled for 20.45 on May 4 in accordance with Television scheduling but Torino and the club’s fans objected and persuaded the league delay the kick-off until the following day.

Granata fans had threatened to boycott the game due to the significance of the date in the club’s history.

The game had originally been scheduled for May 4 so that Empoli could get 72 hours of rest following their fixture with Napoli.
