Watford’s newest arrival, Marco Motta, has admitted that he has wanted to play in England for a long time and also revealed that he came close to joining Manchester City in 2010.

Motta, 28, was released from his Juventus contract in January and was quickly snapped up by the Championship side who are hoping to win promotion to the Premier League, and the defender also admitted that he had offers to stay in Serie A.

“I could have stayed in Serie A but I have wanted to play in England for a long time,” Motta was quoted as saying in Gazzetta dello Sport.

“Here the football is less poisonous and it is at the top of the European game.

“I was close to moving to the Premier League with Manchester City in 2010 when Roma were fighting for the Scudetto, but Giallorossi officials convinced me not to go and I didn’t sign the deal.

“In July I wanted to stay at Genoa but I had to return to Juventus and once again it was not my decision.

“Now I want to make up for lost time and play in the Premier League.”
