Cagliari coach Zdenek Zeman felt that AC Milan’s controversial penalty changed the course of the game in his side’s 3-1 defeat at the Stadio Meazza on Saturday evening.

The Sardinians were 2-1 down when Alessio Cerci was hauled down by Diego Farias and a penalty was awarded, despite replays indicating the foul took place outside the box.

“We came here to play open and attacking football,” the Czech coach told Mediaset Premium.

“We were in the game until the penalty which should not have existed, after that the situation became complicated, as is to be expected.”

Zeman followed up by responding to concerns that his squad lacked the fitness for his intense style of play.

“After three months away the team are not used to certain training systems and styles of play. We will work on this and it will come back to us, even if it is a slow process.”
