AC Milan are a step closer to building a new stadium after receiving approval from the organisation that owns the land in the Portello area of the city.

The Fondazione Fiera Milano has been assessing multiple bids to redevelop the former world fair site but the Rossoneri’s plan is one of two preferred options, alongside an undertaking by asset management company Prelios in conjunction with Vitali.

“Milan is convinced of the quality and uniqueness of its bid, as well as the importance that it represents for the city of Milan,” said the club’s official website.

“Milan aims to build a sustainable and environmentally friendly stadium, easily accessible by public transport, that blends in with the local area and that can offer the city educational, recreational and social activities 7 days a week.

“Ours is mainly a cultural challenge and, as is often the case abroad, the creation of an urban stadium favours the development of the area in which it is built.

“Fans will be given greater responsibility but, at the same time, [there will be] zero tolerance for those who behave inappropriately in and around the stadium.”

Milan want to leave the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza and hand over operations to crosstown rivals Inter and follow Juventus’ lead and own their stadium.

The Diavolo have been at the San Siro during the entirety of their 89-year existence, while Inter moved in for the 1947 season and have remained ever since.
