Bayern Munich defender Medhi Benatia could make a sensational return to Roma in the summer despite his acrimonious departure from the Giallorossi in August 2014.

The Moroccan left for the Bundesliga champions under a cloud after reveling to the media he was to be sold, as the club needed the money, which infuriated president James Pallotta who said the defender was let go because he was a “poisonous liar”.

Now according to La Repubblica, Roma sporting director Walter Sabatini is due to meet Benatia’s agent in the coming days to re-establish relations with the player, with Bayern thought to be open to offers for the 28-year-old who has struggled with injuries since his €26 million move to Bavaria.

Benatia formed a fine centre-back partnership with Leandro Castan during Roma coach Rudi Garcia’s first season in charge of the Giallorossi, and the Frenchman could be keen to reform the pair after his side’s struggles in defence this season.
