Chievo narrowly beat Cesena 1-0 at the Stadio Dino Manuzzi on Sunday afternoon in Serie A, in a dull affair.

The match lacked any real clear-cut chances but captain reliable Sergio Pellissier came off the bench to prove vital for Chievo, netting the winner in the last ten minutes.

It was the visitors who looked most likely to score in the opening exchanges as Alberto Paloschi had two great chances. But from close range one was gathered by Cesena goalkeeper Nicola Leali and the other went wide.

Then at the other end, Luca Krajnc leaped highest to meet a deep free-kick, but he could only divert his header wide of the post.

Riccardo Meggiorini then could have put Chievo in the lead when he received the ball inside the Cesena half and drove at their defence, but his effort from outside the box was dragged wide.

The Cavallucci Marini had one more chance before half-time as the ball was drifted to the edge of the box and Franco Brienza attempted an acrobatic effort which was caught by Bizzarri with relative ease.

At the start of the second half, Luigi Giorgi tried his luck on the volley from outside the box that was sneaking inside the post but Albano Bizzarri tipped it round the post.

The hosts were close to taking the lead on the hour mark as Brienza’s cross was headed away but only as far as Emanuele Cascione who fired back a volley which whistled past the post.

Ervin Zukanovic was inches away from putting the away side in front moments later. The Bosnian rose highest from the corner and his header went just over the posting stamp.

Valter Birsa then went for goal from around 30 yards out, but blazed is effort high over the bar.

It seemed as if the Flying Donkeys were taking the upper hand as Ivan Radovanovic was denied by Leali after he shot from just outside the box.

Going into the final ten minutes of the match, it was very stop-start, with both teams committing a lot of unnecessary fouls.

Then in the 83rd minute, the pressure paid off and visitors took the lead. Nicolas Frey whipped in a cross and Pellissier got across Leali to beat him to the ball and header it just into the bottom corner.

Pellissier nearly got his second of the match in injury time but his curling effort went wide of the post.
