Matteo Darmian ItalyItalian full-back Matteo Darmian expressed his satisfaction with Italy’s performance in a 1-1 friendly draw with England on Tuesday.

The Azzurri went into the lead early courtesy of Graziano Pelle’s header, but eventually lost the lead late in the game after Andros Towsend restored parity.

Even though Italy were not able to pull ahead a second time, Darmian remained positive about the result.

“We put in a good performance despite a strong England side,” Darmian said to Rai Sport.

“We must continue on like this, and we are on the right track.

“Italy were on the back-foot after scoring? I don’t think so, we had many opportunities, and it was still a great team performance.

“I don’t know if England were more talented than us, but tonight we took to the field with determination and aggression. By continuing to do so, we can do well against anyone.

“I think we can still improve, and we must always try. Antonio Conte is still trying to instill his ideas, and tonight we tried doing well by following the directions of the coach.”

The 25-year-old was then asked whether he preffered playing on the left or right flank.

“On the right side I can take advantage of my stronger foot but it does not matter much to me. The important thing is to do well for the national team no matter where I am played.”

He was also asked about recent media comparisons between himself and Italian legend Angelo Di Livio.

“[Di Livio] was a great player. It’s still too early to say if I am as good but I hope to follow in the footsteps of the former Fiorentina and Juventus great.”
