The criteria for European qualification in Serie A will be changed if Napoli or Fiorentina win the 2014/15 Europa League.

As things stand, Serie A’s top three qualify for the Champions League with the following three teams entering the Europa League; however, with the introduction of an automatic Champions League group stage spot for the Europa League winners, there could be four qualifiers for Europe’s top club competition.

Firstly, no matter what six teams will qualify from the Italian peninsula, but the split between the two competitions will change depending on where any eventual winners finish.

For example, if Napoli or Fiorentina win the Europa League but finish fourth they will qualify for the Champions League along with the top-three.

Furthermore, if a Europa League winning team are fifth in Serie A then fourth and sixth-placed will be the two teams who qualify for the Europa League; although if they were to finish outside the top six, sixth-placed would be sacrificed for the side claiming the Europa League.

Although, if either semi-finalist goes on to win the cup while finishing in the top three nothing will change, except perhaps a more-direct qualification route than the usual qualification round for the third-best side in the division.
