Roberto Mancini has lauded his young forward Mauro Icardi following his winning goal against Roma and he also praised the influence of Mateo Kovacic.

Mancini’s sideĀ earned a late win against the Giallorossi on Saturday night despite struggling for long periods during the second half and after the game he was asked if Icardi could reach the same heights as the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic or Sergio Aguero.

“Mauro already is at that level, he can become a great striker,” Mancini told Sky Sport Italia.

“He sometimes wastes the chances he has, but he never feels down and this is a great trait to have.

“Today we have seen it, he’s young and has great quality but needs to improve.”

He then also discussed the importance of Kovacic’s brief substitute appearance in turning the game around.

“He only played 20 minutes but was extraordinary because he changed the game.

“There isn’t a specific role for him, he can play anywhere with that attitude.”

Mancini then revealed he was relieved to win against a top side like Roma.

“It was a good game against a great Roma team, it was not an east thing as they are one of the best sides in the league.”
