Napoli midfielder Dries Mertens has admitted that the side got a little lucky in their Europa League victory at Wolfsburg.
The Partenopei put their German hosts to the sword, running out 4-1 winners in the quarter final first leg, and Mertens conceded on Twitter after the game that the scoreline flattered Rafa Benitez’s side.
“We know our worth, and we know the strength of the group,” Mertens wrote.
“The team today have had more luck than the last few games where we lost but deserved more.”
The Belgian was the architect of Napoli’s first goal of the evening, setting up Gonzalo Higuain to open the scoring.
The Partenopei had been enduring a difficult time in Serie A recently, without a win in five games until their weekend triumph over fellow Europa League quarter-finalists Fiorentina.
