Vicenza edged Avellino 1-0 at the Stadio Romeo Menti on Friday night in Serie B, in what was a fairly drab affair.

Both teams had their chances but in the end it was a strike from Andrea Cocco that proved vital for the Biancorossi.

The visitors started on the front foot when Marcello Trotta weaved his way through the Vicenza defence and struck from outside the box but his effort went high and wide.

Then, Mariano Arini tried his luck from just inside the opposition half which sailed over the bar.

The hosts then took the lead against the run of play as Cocco out-muscled Marco Chiosa and swept the ball across goal into the bottom corner.

The start of the second half saw more pressure from Avellino as they tried to get an equaliser in the match. Luca Bittante smashed a volley at goal from the edge of the box which stung the palms of Mauro Vigorito.

Then, Eros Schiavon raced down the left wing before floating in a cross for the oncoming Luigi Castaldo but he could only direct his header wide of target.

Castaldo had another opportunity moments later as Bittante whipped in a dangerous cross but this time the striker’s header lacked power and was easily gathered by Vigorito.

Down the other end, Vicenza nearly doubled their lead. Lorenzo Laverone powered a free-kick from over 30 yards from goal, but it whistled over the bar.

Cocco could have got his second of the game when he was slipped through on goal, but his attempted lob was off target.

It ended there with Avellino desperate for an equaliser but not getting one. Although, probably an undeserved win for Vicenza, they won’t care as they move ever closer to that automatic promotion spot.
