Martin Skrtel - LiverpoolBundesliga side Wolfsburg are leading the chase to sign Liverpool’s Martin Skrtel ahead of Napoli because they can guarantee the Slovakian Champions League football next season.

With his current deal expiring in 2016, the 30-year-old centre back could be set for a change of scenery as Liverpool do not view his contract renewal as a top priority.

The Mirror reports that Wolfsburg are in pole position to sign Skrtel should he decide to end his seven year stay on Merseyside. Currently sitting comfortably in second place in the league, the German side are virtually certain to be playing Champions League football next term, a proposition which cannot be matched by Napoli who are struggling to catch Roma in Serie A’s third and final Champions League spot.

One advantage Napoli may have over Wolfsburg is the fact the Skrtel has previously worked with coach Rafael Benitez at Liverpool, although the Spaniard’s future in Southern Italy is far from certain.
