AC Milan midfielder Giacomo Bonaventura has praised Atalanta fans after scoring a brace against his former club.

The 25-year-old scored a brace as Milan came away from the Stadio Atleti Azzurri d’Italia with all three points. Atalanta had taken the lead with Daniele Baselli, before Giampaolo Pazzini scored a penalty to make it 1-1.

“I received a lot of affection from the Atalanta fans, there’s not many supporters like them in Italy,” he told Sky Sport Italia after the game ended.

“I scored the two goals with an open goal, I couldn’t even miss. It’s football.

“I’m sad because I didn’t want to hurt Atalanta, but I’m convinced their fans are happy for what I did at Milan.

“I hope Milan will get back to the top, us players must try our best on the pitch.”

The midfielder then looked ahead at the near future, with Antonio Conte who will pick the squad for Italy’s next international games.

“Tomorrow we will know the call-ups for the national team, it’s always great to play for Italy.”

Bonaventura also commented on the future of Milan, telling Mediaset his thoughts on Carlo Ancelotti, who has been linked to become the Rossoneri’s next coach.

“Ancelotti is a winning coach, but our coach right now is [Filippo] Inzaghi. It’s been a complicated season, but we did our best.”
