AC Milan are hoping to take advantage of the rift developing between Vincenzo Montella and Fiorentina supporters which has arisen following the Viola coach’s outburst in the wake of his club’s continental elimination.

Montella criticised his own fans after they booed and whistled his team off the pitch at the end of Fiorentina’s humiliating 5-0 aggregate thrashing at the hands of Sevilla in last week’s semi-final of the Europa League.

The 40-year-old former Catania tactician had been an early favourite to succeed Filippo Inzaghi at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza after it became obvious that Inzaghi would be sacked at the end of the season, but at the time Montella moved quickly to rubbish those rumours, insisting that he would remain in Tuscany.

However, Tuttosport now reports that he is firmly back on the agenda at Milan, with the club hierarchy ready to take advantage of the fractured relationship between the Viola coach and supporters, although Montella’s release clause of €5 million could prove a stumbling block for the Rossoneri.

Other names being linked with the post include Carlo Ancelotti whose future at Real Madrid is increasingly uncertain and Unai Emery of Sevilla.
