The attacker was born in Reggio Emilia to Moroccan parents on June 15 1998 and has already been capped by the Italy Under-16 national team.

La Gazzetta dello Sport reports that the 16-year-old has been named in the 30-man squad by Moroccan coach Badou Zaki for their first 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier on June 12 in Agadir.

Mastour is still to decide whether he will accept the invitation or continue playing for the Italian youth teams and wait for a potential senior call-up in the future.

Morocco had been banned from participating in the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations after failing to host this year’s tournament due to concerns following the outbreak of the Ebola virus in Africa.

However, the Court of Arbitration for Sport has since overturned the ruling made by the Confederation of African Football.
