Carlo Ancelotti has appeared to close the door on a possible return to AC Milan by claiming that he will take a year out of football for health reasons if he is relived of his duties by Real Madrid.

The 55-year-old tactician looks set to be sacked by Florentino Pérez after finishing his second season in Madrid without a major trophy and Milan had hoped to convince him to return to the Rossoneri with president Silvio Berlusconi reportedly set to hand him a €150 million transfer fund to rebuild the struggling giants.

“As for my future,” Ancelotti explained to Il Giornale, “in the event that I bid farewell to Real, I can only repeat what I said in the press conference which is that I will rest for a year.”

“This is because I have a very serious reason to take time out. I have to have an operation because of cervical stenosis that for some time has caused me a tingling sensation in my hands, and I do not know how long I have to physically stop.”

Galliani, Milan’s vice-president, flew out to Madrid on Monday in the hope of persuading Ancelotti to return to the club he guided to two Champions League triumphs during the pervious decade, although the Milan transfer guru did hint that he had plenty of other business to attend to while in Spain.

“[Adriano] Galliani coming to Madrid? It will be a pleasure to have guests for dinner, but I can not change my plans,” the coach said.

“The operation is already scheduled in Canada, and after that I will have a rest because the two years I have spent at Real have been very difficult and especially challenging.”
