Atalanta striker German Denis has publicly apologised following his violent actions towards Lorenzo Tonelli.

The Empoli defender was thrown a punch by Denis in the dressing rooms following the 2-2 draw the two clubs played out on April 29, which has given the striker a five match ban, and Denis has said sorry in public for his outburst.

“I had a moment of anger and couldn’t control myself, I am very sorry,” a statement from the 33-year-old read on Atalanta’s club website.

“I have already apologised to my teammates and the club, but now it’s right to apologise publicly.

“I was wrong, there is no excuse for what I did.

“Tonelli heavily provoked me, that’s for sure, but I was wrong to react like that.

“I have never reacted this way in my entire career.

“I’ve never been sent off for violent conduct, am not an aggressive person.”
