Ahead of Genoa’s final match of the season against Sassuolo on Sunday, Rossoblu coach Gian Piero Gasperini has praised his players after they have secured sixth place in Serie A.

The Grifone obtained the Europa League spot during last weeks dramatic 3-2 victory against Inter and Gasperini has admitted he is fortunate to have such a great group of players.

“The match against Inter was frantic because both side’s sole objective was to obtain the victory,” said Gasperini to Radio Deejay.

“I am extremely fortunate because I have a very good group of players.

“This team gives me great satisfaction because at the start we did not have much ambition and now we have come out on top.”

The 57-year-old tactician has also spoken about the future prospects of Mattia Perin, of whom he believes is ready to make the step up to a big club.

“I think he is ready to take a step-up in quality. He is still a very young boy but he has made important improvements in terms of his physical stature,” said Gasperini.

“When he was younger there were doubts about whether he was too frail but he has worked hard and confronted them.”

Lastly, Gasperini has stated that he hopes to still be Genoa coach for the forthcoming season, even if Genoa are not granted their permit for the Europa League.

“I hope to remain at Genoa regardless of the Europa League. It will be the second time that we have qualified in recent years. ”

“Last time we had champions like Milito [Diego] and Motta [Thiago] but this time it was an unexpected and hard-fought achievement.”
