Genoa will have to wait for the outcome of its appeal against the [Italian Football Federation] FIGC after its lawyer, Carlo Frattini, failed to turn up to the hearing.

The Grifone saw theirĀ application for a UEFA licence rejected by Italian football’s governing body, which could see them miss out on European football, despite the fact that they look set to qualify for the Europa League.

Reports suggest that the sixth placed side had their application rejected on a number of grounds, most notably the fact that the paperwork for the application was submitted later than the deadline as well as the fact that their home stadium has been deemed to not be of the standard for European matches.

Should Genoa lose their appeal, it could significantly shake up the league and present both Sampdoria and inter Milan the opportunity to qualify for next season’s Europa League.

Last season, Parma found themselves in a similar situation whereby, despite finishing sixth, Torino progressed into the Europa League where they progressed to the round-of 16.

With one game to spare, Genoa find themselves in sixth position on 59 points, two behind fifth-placed Fiorentina.
