After five years of investing as a majority shareholder with Lega Pro Prima Divisione and hometown club Carrarese, Gianluigi Buffon has walked away from his position as patron.

The Azzurri earned promotion from the Lega Pro Seconde Divisione immediately after acquisition by a consortium that included Buffon, Pisa president Maurizio Mian, and former Serie A striker Cristiano Lucarelli in 2010, but the have since left the Juventus goalkeeper alone in the investment.

“My gesture of love is not being repaid by the environment,” Buffon said, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“Twice in five years I have chosen to be part of two entrepreneurial groups eager to revive the fortunes of Carrara. The first group split after two years, leaving me alone. The second, despite promises, did not even materialize.

“I’m disappointed, June 30 will be my last day as a patron. I have always chosen the path of investment, despite knowing that this would be a choice of affection and not of business.”
