Manchester City midfielder Frank Lampard has revealed that he turned down the chance to move to Inter and reunite with Jose Mourinho when the tactician was at the club.

The 36-year-old, who is set to bring his Premier League career to an end on Sunday before joining MLS and New York City FC, admitted that he only seriously considered playing abroad on one occasion, when the Portuguese tactician tried to bring him to the Nerazzurri while Lampard was still with Chelsea.

“I had ideas when I was younger to maybe take the challenge of moving abroad,” he revealed while speaking with The Sunday Express.

“It came up a few times but the only realistic one was to go to Inter when Jose Mourinho was there.

“I decided against it and I’m very pleased I did that now because of what I have subsequently achieved though the longevity of being at Chelsea.

“Winning more trophies – the European Cup, the Europa League, another league title, personal stuff. Everything came together.

“I thought about it because it was a difficult stage of my life because I had lost my mom the year before. In the end it was a personal and a professional choice to stay and certainly it was the right one.”
