Lazio are prepared to turn down Manchester United in their pursuit of Dutch defender Stefan de Vrij as they want to hold on to one of their star performers as they continue their quest for Champions League football.

The 23-year-old only joined the Biancocelesti from Feyenoord last summer, but his form has been such that some of Europe’s biggest clubs are now looking to take the centre-back from the capital, with current United boss Louis Van Gaal a huge fan of the Dutch international.

According to the Metro, the Red Devils are said to have already made an offer around €25 million for the defender which was turned down by Le Aquile president Claudio Lotito, and indeed has informed the Premier League club he has no intention of selling one of his prize assets.

De Vrij has made 27 appearances so far this season in Serie A, but did suffer an injury scare in the Biancocelesti’s 4-0 win of Empoli three weeks ago, though no serious ligament damage occurred and could make a return to the side before the end of the season.
