Maradona - NapoliNapoli legend Diego Maradona has backed club president Aurelio De Laurentiis following his outburst at the 1-1 draw with Dnipro in the Europa League semi-final first leg.

The Partenopei patron launched an attack on UEFA president Michel Platini and Norwegian referee Svein Oddvar Moen after Yevhen Seleznyov equalised from an offside position for the visitors at the Stadio San Paolo.

“I fully agree with the statements made by the president and have great regret for what happened,” the 54-year-old told GonfiaLaRete.com.

“I saw my Napoli play and it is inconceivable that at such a high professional level we should still be seeing similar errors that seriously compromise the importance of playing a semi-final of the Europa League.

“It is about time that figures like [FIFA president Sepp] Blatter and Platini should stand aside if they are unable to handle such a situation, among other things, to the detriment of a major club and their passionate fans.

“I sincerely hope that Napoli can overcome Dnipro and return to the final of the Europa League after so many years.

“Because Napoli, but especially the fans and the city, deserve respect from everyone.”
