Roma sporting director Walter Sabatini is targeting Fiorentina’s Argentine defender Gonzalo Rodriguez as a potential Summer signing, in an attempt to bolster coach Rudi Garcia’s rear guard.

The Serie A heavyweights have struggled to replace stopper Mehdi Benatia, who left for Bayern Munich at the end of last season and have also been without Brazilian centre back Leandro Castan, who continues to recover from brain surgery.

La Gazzetta Dello Sport are reporting that Rodriguez would be an ideal player for Roma, given his technical and tactical qualities and an offer of around €2 million a season has been prepared.

However, his current good relationship with the Viola may be a problem that the Stadio Olimpico outfit may struggle to overcome even with the a guarantee of Champions League football.

The former Villarreal player is currently captain of Vincenzo Montella’s side and is perfectly settled in Florence and soon to become a father.
