Sampdoria’s attempts to secure Basel’s Paulo Sousa as their coach for next season appear to have run into unforeseen problems, putting the whole deal at risk of collapse.

The Portugese tactician is the Blucerchiati’s number one target to take over from current coach Siniša Mihajlovic if the Serb departs as expected in June. Despite leading the Genoses club to an impressive season the 46-year-old has refused to commit to Sampdoria as he entertains interest from several of Italy’s larger sides.

It was believed that Sampdoria and Paulo Sousa had reached an agreement in principle over the weekend, but now Sky Sport Italia reports that the deal is now at risk. It is understood that the issues stem from personal problems from Sousa’s side.

The 44-year-old is no stranger to Italian having played for Juventus, Inter and Parma throughout the 1990s.
