Maurizio Sarri is keen to ensure that his Empoli side guarantee their Serie A status for another season with a positive result against Torino in Turin on Wednesday afternoon.

The Azzurri have defied expectations this term after winning promotion last June and Sarri has won many plaudits with his attacking brand of football and his use of young Italian talent.

“I expect a tough match for many reasons,” Sarri explained to his club’s website.

“We face a strong and well organised team who at this time are still playing for some important goals and who will want to appropriately honour the anniversary of Superga.

“Tomorrow we play with the knowledge that mathematically, we can ensure our safety as well as move closer to the teams above us: if we can achieve our goal of survival then it will prove all those people wrong who wrote us off and show that there is still room in football for a team like ours.”

The 56-year-old then turned his attention to the commemorations marking the anniversary of the 1949 Superga air disaster which resulted in the tragic deaths of the Grande Torino team who won five championships in the 1940’s.

“I would willingly go to the ceremony as I feel that I should be there, but it is very unfortunate that the game has been scheduled for Wednesday.

“Il Grande Torino represents so much for the history of Italian football and also very important to the history of our country.”

Empoli currently sit 15th in the Serie A table.
