Frosinone defeated Bologna 2-1 at the Stadio Matusa on Saturday afternoon in Serie B, to get some breathing space in second place.

Danilo Soddimo opened the scoring for the hosts in the second minute but just three minutes later Luca Ceccarelli levelled. Leonardo Blanchard put Frosinone back in front in the fifteenth minute and that was the end of the scoring.

It was a quick start in the game as Soddimo put the Ciocari in front. The winger was at the back post to knock the ball into an empty net following Robert Gucher’s overhead kick.

In the fifth minute the visitors got back on level terms. A corner found its way to the back post and Ceccarelli slotted the ball home.

The home side regained their lead just ten minutes later as Soddimo whipped in a cross and Blanchard leaped highest and guided his header into the bottom corner.

Frosinone were on top and could have added to the scoring in the second half when Soddimo’s effort bounced back off the bar.

Soddimo was at it again moments later as he curled his effort on to the post from just outside the box. Deservedly so, the hosts held out to win and go four points ahead of Bologna in second place.

Elsewhere, Spezia thrashed Brescia 4-1 in a heavily one-sided match, which leaves the defeated side one off the bottom.

Nene put Spezia in front in the sixth minute and they could have doubled their lead on the half-hour mark but Andrea Catellani missed from the spot.

Andrea Caracciolo equalised just minutes later for the visitors but before the break, the Aquilotti went back in front thanks to a strike from Niko Datkovic.

Catellani made amends in the second half as he made it 3-1. Valerio Di Cesare scored an own goal midway through the second half to pile more misery on his side.

Pro Vercelli edged Crotone 3-2 at the Stadio Piola thanks to a winning goal from Ronaldo Pompeu.

The Leoni raced into a 2-0 lead inside 26 minutes as Francesco Cosenza netted and then Claiton scored an own goal.

Before half-time, the Rossoblu pulled back two quick-fire goals through Raffaele Maiello and Camilo Ciano. At the start of the second half, Ronaldo grabbed the winner to help his side escape the relegation zone.

Livorno snatched a 1-1 draw at Catania thanks to a 96th minute penalty from Daniele Vantaggiato.

Daniele Sciaudone put the Elefanti in front in the 20th minute and Livorno keep their play off position courtesy of that late leveller.

Latina pulled off a 2-1 away win at bottom of  the table Varese. Antonini Culina put the Leopardi in front in the 25th minute, but Najib Ammari equalised for the away side. They turned the game on its head at the start of the second half as Matteo Bruscagin grabbed a goal.

Bari helped their chances of a late push for promotion as a timely goal from Giuseppe De Luca earned them a 1-0 win over Cittadella.

Perugia kept their place in the playoffs as a fourth minute penalty from Diego Falcinelli gave them a 1-0 victory against Trapani.

Ternana dropped to just one place above the relegation zone after they drew 1-1 away at Virtus Lanciano.

Fere took the lead in the opening ten minutes as Antonio Aquilanti put through his own net. Before the break Antonio Piccolo netted from the spot and that’s how the scoring ended.

There was also a stalemate in the game between promotion-chasers Vicenza and Virtus Entella.
