Torino overcame a plucky Chievo side 2-0 at the Stadio Olimpico di Torino in Serie A on Sunday afternoon.

Maxi Lopez came back to haunt his old club as he grabbed two goals and three valuable points for the Granata.

The home side started the livelier with Josef Martinez heading wide from an Omar El Kaddouri cross, before the Moroccan fired wide from distance moments later.

El Kaddouri was the instigator as he put a free kick just over the bar after Martinez was fouled just outside the penalty area.

Both teams were resulting to shots from outside the penalty area with Anders Christiansen missing the target for Chievo, and El Kaddouri doing the same for Torino.

Torino had two good chances with Martinez found in space inside the penalty area, but poor awareness meant he was closed down with teammates free to his left.

Martinez was then denied by Francesco Bardi just before the break as palmed the shot out for a corner.

The second half started much like the first with Torino taking the game to Chievo.

El Kaddouri once again tested Bardi from distance, but the goalkeeper was equal to the effort. Bardi was called into action again this time pushing a Martinez shot out for a corner.

Torino managed to put the ball in the back of the net after Lopez rose to head home as the ball bounced around in the penalty area from the resulting set piece.

That goal saw Chievo start to push forward a little more, and as a result left themselves more open at the back. First an El Kaddouri cross flashed across goal, then Lopez had a powerful strike blocked by Bostjan Cesar.

Gaston Silva then tried a speculative effort from well outside the area which had to be tipped out from under the crossbar by Bardi.

Torino then doubled their lead after Lopez latched onto a clearance, outpacing Cesar, the Argentinian slotted past Bardi into the far left corner.

Lopez almost got his hat-trick after being played in on goal by Martinez, but this time his shot was tame and easily collected by Bardi.

The Argentinian then got on the end of a deflected Matteo Darmian cross, but his shot too a touch off the Chievo defence and floated inches wide.

Another swift Torino counter attack was bundled home by Martinez, but subsequently ruled offside as his initial pass to Lopez was adjudged foul.

As the game drew to a close, Torino could have added a third but Martinez was denied by Bardi who stood tall as the Venezuelan bore down on goal.
