Torino finished their season in style after a comprehensive 5-0 victory against already relegated Cesena at the Stadio Olimpico di Torino.

Torino opened the scoring in the tenth minute when Josef Martinez nodded in after a save from Walter Bressan then Maxi Lopez added their second within the space of just six minutes against the hapless Seahorses.

Marco Benassi added to Cesena’s misery when he scored Torino’s third after the half hour mark and Emiliano Moretti headed in the Granata’s fourth shortly after the interval and Lopez added his second after a cut-back from Bruno Peres.

The result means Giampiero Ventura’s team finish the season in the top half of the table again whilst Domenico Di Carlo’s Cesena who had already been resigned to Serie B football next season bow out of the top flight with just one away victory in the league all season.

Colombian forward Josef Martinez and the Argentine Maxi Lopez troubled the away side’s defence early on and Torino took the lead after ten minutes when Giuseppe Vives’ shot deflected off Lika Krajnc forcing goalkeeper Walter Bressan to palm the ball away only to find Martinez who nodded the Granata ahead.

The home side doubled their lead within the space of six minutes after a great cross from the excellent Matteo Darmian found Martinez in the box who thundered his header against the underside of the cross bar and looked to have scored himself but the ball bounced just shy of the line, but Lopez was there anyway to blast the ball into the net and send Torino into a commanding early position.

Cesena struggled to recover a foothold in the match and Torino had more chances to add to their lead but the third goal came after the half hour mark when Benassi blasted a shot from about thirty yards which swept past the despairing Bressan.

Just before half-time Martinez should have doubled his tally for the evening when he went through on goal only to shoot wide.

It took less than four minutes after the interval  for Torino to extend their lead when Emiliano Moretti powered his header past Bressan after Vives’ corner.

Torino continued to search for a fifth goal and very nearly got one when Martinez’s ball for Lopez could only find Cesena’s Massimo Volta who nearly deflected the ball into his own net and the visitors had Bressan to thank when he pulled off a good stop after the ball was cut back to Lopez on the edge of the box.

Cesena finally managed a chance when Nikola Maksimovic gave away a foul on the edge of the box, but Franco Brienza could only fire the resulting free-kick over the bar.

But the Granata were celebrating again after good work from Bruno Peres on the right cut the ball back for Lopez to score his second of the evening.

Chances became few and far between as the Granata comfortably retained possession and Matteo Darmian attracted a rapturous applause after being substituted in possibly his last appearance for Torino.
