Despite watching his side’s disappointing defeat to Empoli cast doubt on Torino’s European aspirations, Giampiero Ventura refused to accept the Europa League was out of reach.

After a Daniele Padelli error gifted Empoli the lead, the Granata were unable to get back on terms.

“I’ve never seen such an error before,” lamented Ventura to Sky Sport Italia, “but it happened.

“I’m sorry both for ourselves and for Padelli, who did some good things during the match. In football, only those who don’t play don’t make mistakes.

“We did react against Empoli,” he continued, “but we have 15 more games [than them] in our legs, and in the heat, we could feel it.”

“With four games remaining, we have to think of winning the two at home and then it’ll be a playoff with Genoa. We don’t need to win all four. Based on results, and head to head meetings three wins and a draw may be enough [to qualify].”
